Found in the Williams Northern Light, by Robert Norris:
In last week’s Baudette Region, Mrs. Sadye (sic) Morrison Bain, first teacher in Baudette’s school, contributed a little original poem concerning the children whom she taught in 1904-1905. She refers to our Mayor Bert Chase in this manner, “The cunning curls of Bertie Chase.” Boy, but we’ll bet Bertie was a sweet little feller back in those days with his curls ‘n everything.
(Note from Evelyn Bain Erickson: I’m sure my Mom would want me to make a small correction of the above. She was the second teacher in Baudette. Esther Thomas was the first and Clara Farder the third.)
A Memorial (’26 Hunting Season)
When hubby took his head to town
To try to get it mounted,
It cost so much ‘twould make you frown
But that he never counted.
I told him to forget that deer
We could get along without it,
He looked at me so very queer
As though his hopes were flouted.
Now how could he just let it be
And not pull off the stunt
Of parking it where all will see—
A “trophy of the hunt”?
(Lest we forget)
