“Hello Grandma,” she says, ‘Hello”.
Ah me, I thrill unto the sound
Of that sweet voice upon my ear
‘Tis baby’s voice I hear.
She tells me that her dog is well,
Her cat, her dolls – & that she will
come so very soon.
The childishness—the innocence,
‘Tis hard to think she’ll come to
Comprehend a world so full of strife & woe.
‘Hello Patty,” says I, “Hello”.
Be good & come & make dough & cut
Elephants & dogs, at my house.
We will have fun & you can sing and play on
the big piano instead of your little one.
A voice with tones from out the past;
Ah me,
The years may come, the years may go
But changeless still those tones to me.
In baby’s sweet “Hello!”
My ears attuned will ever be.
